“My current work revolves around the concept of After Images - taking existing physical forms - water, plaster and papered walls, architectural fragments, graffiti, and reinterpreting them as a piece of art cloth. I am currently working with old pressed tin ceiling tiles. The tiles have a grace and beauty in their basic design that has lasted through many years. The bent, rusty pieces that I have collected often have layers of paint, holes, crumbling edges. These signs of wear remind me that people lived in and used the spaces that these tiles were apart of. What has happened to them over time adds to their character and visual interest. I capture the image by dye "casting" it. I embellish the image with color pencil, pastel, and stitching to bring out details and to add another dimension. I often combine tin pieces to create a frieze. The final image is a unique whole cloth piece with its own color, tone and shading. I am working on three series at this time:
  • Reflections: a series of art quilts based upon photos that I have taken of reflection and shadow images
  • After Images: whole cloth art quits built from the ceiling tiles
  • After Effects: art cloth using the tiles as well as other surface design techniques
