You'll learn how to tease an inkjet printer into using unusual substrates, what kind of printers work best, and how to get around the size limitations of your printer by making poster prints online and using polymer medium to make prints with painterly qualities. If you like, bring your own inkjet printer or use the instructor's to learn the basics. August 7-8, 2010. Southwest School of Art and Craft, San Antonio, TX; (210) 224-1848; www.swschool.org

Lisa Kerpoe, Creating Texture on Fabric. Have you wanted to try screen printing, but weren’t sure where to start? In this introduction to screen printing, participants will learn a variety of techniques to add rich color and texture to fabric using fiber reactive dyes. Fiber reactive dyes provide vibrant, permanent color on natural fibers and are non-toxic and easy to use. All of the techniques covered are easy to replicate at home, without the need for special equipment. The focus will be on using techniques that are not permanent, so the silkscreen can be used over and over for many different designs. Participants will experiment with several masking and resist techniques and will have the opportunity to layer the techniques for added texture. September 22- 24 2010. Hill Country Arts Foundation, Ingram, TX; (830) 367-5120; www.hcaf.com

Lisa Kerpoe, Independent Projects Take advantage of the excellent studio space and the instructor's expertise to work on projects of your choosing. Participants will identify their objectives for the 8 week period and work with the instructor to create a plan to accomplish those objectives. October 15 - December 9, 2010. Southwest School of Art & Craft, San Antonio, TX; (210) 224-1848; www.swschool.org

Susie Monday,, Design Projects for Juried Exhibits. In this course, you will find an appropriate exhibit for your work and your accomplishment level, critique your portfolio of work and help you prepare it for presentation, and guide you through the application procedure including photography, artist statement and biography requirement. Oct 18 – Nov 22, 2010. Southwest School of Art and Craft, San Antonio, TX; (210) 224-1848; www.swschool.org

Lisa Kerpoe, From the Kitchen to the Cloth: Oatmeal and Flour Paste Resists Use ingredients from your kitchen to create a wide range of patterns and texture on fabric. Participants will experiment with fiber reactive dyes and a variety of resist materials to add depth and complexity to their fabric, including oatmeal, flour, potato and sugar. You will learn different ways to apply the resists and tips for easy removal. Two techniques will be explored in the workshop: direct application of the resist to fabric and application of the resist to a silkscreen. October 19-December 7, 2010. Southwest School of Art & Craft, San Antonio, TX; (210) 224-1848; www.swschool.org

Lisa Kerpoe,Jane Dunnewold, Vibrant Color: Combining Soy Wax and Dye for Brilliant Results Got soy wax? Got dye? Put the two together in exciting combinations, including crayons perfect for rubbings, drawing and writing; hot, colored wax - ideal for stamping and direct applications and wax paste, perfect for stenciling. Soy wax is biodegradable and a renewable resource. When combined with fiber reactive dyes the results are fabulous - intricate patterns with the staying power of the dyes but with an ease of wash-out unmatched by other resists. We’ll begin our three day exploration with a discussion of both products - dyes and wax - and then jump right into crayon production. A thorough explanation of the wax’s characteristics will include open lab time for experimentation with stamping and stenciling. Additional lectures focus on building and using a steamer, ideas for incorporation of techniques into other surface design processes, and an end of weekend show and tell. October 22 - 24, 2010. ArtCloth Studios, San Antonio, TX; www.artclothstudios.com

Susie Monday,, Soy Wax Batik.Explore one of the latest hot wax techniques to make beautiful multicolored fabrics. Oct. 30-31, 2010. Southwest School of Art and Craft, San Antonio, TX; (210) 224-1848; www.swschool.org

Lisa Kerpoe, Sheer Color: Layered Screen Printing Techniques Achieve vibrant color and distinctive patterning through repeated layers of screenprinting. Unlike paint, in which each layer covers the layer below, the transparency of dyes allows each layer of color and pattern to remain visible. You will use a variety of resist and masking techniques with a blank silkscreen, including gel glue, soy wax, paper masks, and found object stencils. Learn how an understanding of saturation and color choice can help you avoid a “muddy” effect. In addition to creating “sheer” color on a medium weight fabric, you will explore the use of sheer fabrics. Learn techniques for printing multiple layers of sheers at one time, creating several pieces of coordinated cloth. November 13-14, 2010. Southwest School of Art & Craft, San Antonio, TX; (210) 224-1848; www.swschool.org
