Lisa Kerpoe, Fabulous Texture: Resist Techniques for Surface Design. Learn a
variety of techniques to create beautiful pattern and texture on cloth using resists. A resist is
a substance that is applied to cloth to block the penetration of dye. Two techniques will be
explored in the workshop: direct application of the resist to fabric and applying the resist to a
silkscreen to create a unique screenprinted pattern. Lisa will demonstrate the use of 5
resists: oatmeal, potato and corn dextrin, soy wax and Presist You will have open studio time
to experiment with each of the resists and will learn numerous variations. Procion dyes will
be used to paint the fabric over the resist and for screenprinting. These dyes are easy-to-use,
non-toxic and produce vivid colors. This is a great opportunity to add some new tools to your
surface design toolbox. July 25-29, 2012. ProChemical and Dye, Fall River, MA;

Susie Monday, Screen Prints with Computer Altered Images. Learn design
techniques with computer software, a copier/printer, cut paper and photos to create screen-
printing tools and thermofax screens (a thermal film stencil used like a silkscreen) during
this weekend of exploration, investigation and experimentation. Starting with one or two
photographic images of plants or flowers and black and white paper - transform the images
with the aid of a computer and a copier/printer. Bring your own laptop if you have one, or
use the instructor's. You will make prints on fabric, and if you wish, on a cotton T-shirt.
Tuition includes thermofax screens. See SSA website for a materials list. October 22-23,

Classes/Workshops
Lisa Kerpoe, Soy Wax and Dye: A Winning Combination – Demonstration. Did you
ever wonder, "What would happen if I add dye to soy wax resist?" Find out all the
possibilities in this intriguing demonstration. Soy wax is a renewable resource and
combines with MX dyes to produce fabulous results - intricate patterns with the staying
power of the dyes and an ease of wash-out unmatched by other resists. Lisa will
demonstrate a variety of hot wax and dye application techniques and will discuss options for
applying background color and tips for dye and wax removal. These techniques are the
result of over 2 years of exploration and experimentation. November 3, 2011. International
Quilt Festival, Houston, TX; www.quilts.com

wax. Using washable gel glue and easy-to-use dyes, experiment with five distinctive
techniques. November 4, 2011. International Quilt Festival, Houston, TX; www.quilts.com
Lisa Kerpoe, Irresistible Texture: Using Resists to Create Stunning Cloth. Explore
three inexpensive, easy-to-use substances as a resist to create unique texture on cloth.

Lisa Kerpoe, Boring to Beautiful: Transform Your Fabric with Brayer Printing. Have
a lot of "ho-hum" fabrics in your stash? Perhaps they were dye experiments gone wrong.
Or maybe commercial fabric that needs a little lift. Learn a variety of techniques to transform
these fabrics using a simple foam brayer. Participants will experiment with creating texture
from everyday objects, using paper and tape to mask off areas before brayering, creating
their own custom-carved brayer and more. Demonstrations of the techniques will be
rounded out with a discussion of layering, contrast and effective color choices. November

Lisa Kerpoe, Color Exploration. Do you have trouble getting just the right color with your
dyes? Understand color theory, but have difficulty putting it into practice? Achieve more
predictable results from dyeing and gain more confidence about color choices. Topics include:
mixing colors from primary colors, cool vs. warm colors and how they affect color mixing;
bright colors versus low intensity colors, adjusting dye recipes to achieved the desired hue;
how different fabrics react differently to the dyes; how both primary and secondary colors
react when overdyed. This is a hands-on workshop, in which participants will dye numerous
samples and create a collection of color swatches to help in future color planning choices.
