This exhibit displays art cloth that explores the physical, philosophical and creative interpretations of undercurrents.

Undercurrents has been chosen as the theme because beneath its beautiful surface, art cloth invites interaction and engenders a response to the whole piece of cloth by the viewer.  Art cloth by its very nature is created through the accumulated imagery and techniques that build up a surface.  This exhibit will expose and explore the story that is told when you look below the surface of a piece of art cloth.

Juror’s Statement

“Undercurrents” explores various imagery of art cloth. The title, “Undercurrents”, was given by the group Art Cloth Network. It can be interpreted by each person not only in the literal sense of a condition of scene, but also by mining the imagery for a social, cultural, historical and metaphorical point of view. Each person interprets the word “undercurrent” differently because of variety of life experience, and each expresses various surfaces and underlying surfaces.

In the entries for “Undercurrents”, there was much diverse imagery. I selected a total of fifteen pieces that convey the theme. The work, “Requiem”, describes very complex imagery that would be interpreted as mythical and psychological interpretation on cloth. “River Rocks” employs metaphorical imagery about a life through the image of water. Many works express imagery from landscape. This exhibition provides a great opportunity for the artists to show their own ideas using the textile medium as both a process and an expressive tool.
